Our Games 🙂
The following portfolio includes short write-ups on the games I worked on through the course of this masters program most of which produced entirely during my final thesis project. The purpose of the write-ups is to give the reader a more in-depth knowledge of them. It is also a chance for myself to reflect on the experiments and see where I can go forward with them.
These prototypes pivot from my original thesis pitch where I wanted to create a game to help students and young professionals set up a proper home work space. Although much different, I feel the core of the thesis is still present. I wanted to make a game that brought about some kind of realization to help with their work or studies. A recurring theme in my games is a commentary on society in a philosophical way. Although it may not aid the player in setting up a home workstation it may be the catalyst for some sociological or philosophical realization. Creating games with positive influence and proving that emerging gaming technologies are an influential outlet is my thesis.
The actor Shia LaBeouf made a statement during a motivational talk he produced in 2016, he stated:
“Emerging gaming technologies operate within a nexus of social relationships that characterize the modern world. These technologies enable a constant commentary which has become the quintessential quality of power, often operating as mechanisms that dictate our action and preordain our expectations.”[1]
I feel this quote very much encapsulates many of the realizations that I have made during my final thesis project. I invite you to read through the write-ups first then try the games. My hope is that with a bit of background knowledge on the game, the message I am portraying through my design might have more of an impact.
